Coolidge Park: a place to picnic and play
Mar 3, 2010
It’s the simple things in life that often mean the most. And it doesn’t get less complicated than spending an afternoon at Coolidge Park in downtown Chattanooga.
A well-rounded city is judged, not only on its economy, but also on its quality of life. And even mid-sized metropolises need parks and green space for citizens to gather and relax. Coolidge Park is that place in Chattanooga.
Just on the other side of the bridge from Chattanooga’s retail and entertainment district, on the banks of Tennessee River, Coolidge Park welcomes visitors with vast green space and plenty of old-fashioned fun.
The seven-acre park may not be huge, but it packs quite a punch.
Coolidge Park’s greatest draw may very well be the carousel. First carved by German-immigrant, Gustav Dentzel, in Philadelphia during 1895, the carousel has a history that runs up and down the east coast in cities like Rochester, New York and Atlanta’s Grant Park. It was brought to the attention of Chattanooga residents during the 1980’s and fundraiser was begun to restore it and bring it to Coolidge Park.
Today, it is still one of the city’s best features. But Coolidge Park isn’t all “horsing around.” Well maintained green lawns stretch out for days, it seems. Visitors can spread a blanket and pull out a picnic, or simply stroll the perimeter for lovely views of the water and city.
During the summer a free interactive play fountain area – complete with giant concrete animal statues – is turned on, much to the delight of young visitors. Movie nights bring out scores of families, who may run across the street for take out dessert to enjoy with whatever latest the Pixar flick is playing.
Regardless of the time of year, everyone loves the Walnut Street Bridge, where pedestrians and bikers may meander in peace high above the grassy park and over the river. The exquisite views don’t hurt either!
The carousel’s hours vary dependent upon the school year. The cost is $.50 for children and seniors and $1 for adults.
