Hunter Museum of Art: Learning the American way through art

May 27, 2010

Perched on an 80-foot bluff on the edge of the Tennessee River, the Hunter Museum of American Art offers stunning views of the river and the surrounding mountains. This panorama equals the extensive collection of American art found inside, recognized as one of the country’s finest.

With three buildings representing 100 years of architecture, the Hunter Museum of American Art can be noticed in its prominent place in the Chattanooga skyline. The museum is located in an historical mansion and a sleek contemporary building overlooking the river.

Once inside, the museum presents art in such a way that people of all ages can enjoy the experience. Together, guests will get the chance to see art from a new perspective, understanding American history and learning what shapes Americans today through the various exhibitions.

The collection includes paintings, works on paper, sculptures, furniture and contemporary studio glass covering a diverse range of styles and periods. Just a few of the well-known artists represented in the Hunter include Thomas Cole, Fitzhugh Lane, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, John Marin, Thomas Hart Benton, Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Nevelson, Jack Beal, George Segal, Duane Hanson and Robert Rauschenberg.

The museum offers a number of programs in addition to the featured exhibitions. For adults, the Hunter Museum offers a variety of classes and workshops through the fall, winter and spring. There you can explore a new hobby, brush up on old skills and socialize with new and like-minded people. The Hunter has lots of ways for children to explore the arts. Kids have the option to join Art Club, Pre-K Days, Homeschool Workshops and more.
